Here’s the video of me getting through the Ding Dong Gong Show (that link should take you right to 28:56, if not that’s where you need to skip to).
I’m probably not going to be sending the video to promoters, because the audio was recorded only through the mics, which makes the audience laughter sound a lot quieter than it actually was. It may look like I only got through by the skin of my teeth and I was just lucky. Now that’s true, but I swear the audience laughter was louder than the video makes it seem.
My brain seems to stop working at the 32:25 mark because some guy was ordering lager at the bar to my left extremely loudly and it threw me. It barely gets picked up on the audio. I should probably have addressed it at the time rather than just going “errr” for 10 seconds.
Anyway I got through the gong, so that’s good.
Rats Comedy
On Tuesday I did Rats Open Mic Comedy and won the audience clap-off at the end (I broke all the rules - yet again - by using this mailing list to let people know when I’m performing, meaning one of my friends was in the audience and whooped loudly for me).
Rats bills itself as one of the worst open mic nights in London, which is really refreshing when every open mic brags about how “supportive” or “good” it is. It actually turned out to be a good night. Unlike many open mics, the promoter puts some thought and effort into promoting it by doing stuff like selling tickets and getting people to come up from the bar below.
There’s even a podcast recorded at the end of the night: Rat Chat Episode 7 features me and “David” (names may have been changed for anonymity).
This means that I will be doing the Big Rat Grand Final on Tuesday 26th July at the Day & Night bar at the corner of Chapel Market and Penton Street in Islington, trying to win the prestigious Big Rat prize. You can bet that I’ll be pestering the fuck out of you to come and support me once the ticket link is up.

Apparently doing the Edinburgh Fringe sucks now. I’m glad I’m not trying to do a full show, I’m just going up for a couple of weeks and trying to get whatever random spots I can. It seems like British acts are disillusioned with the Fringe, but in America doing an Edinburgh show style show where it’s an hour about your relationship with your dead dad is the new happening thing. Personally I like when comedy is an hour of jokes, with no contrived emotional arc, and nobody learns anything.
The writer of this article in the Verge seems mad that the software developers and marketing interns at Netflix don’t get to veto shows they don’t like. I think that’s a good thing and if they don’t like something Netflix puts out, they should grow up and fuck off.
Wannabe comedians: G&B Comedy is running the Everything But The Gags workshop again on July 24th. It’s about performance skills rather than writing jokes. Definitely worth doing if you can.
Now Boris is seemingly going, check out my essay Boris Johnson, reconsidered as a hack comic. Remember when I had the energy to write essays like that?
Follow my Twitch stream where I kill Hitler with a humorous commentary. No, I don’t know why people want to watch other people play videogames either, but just make an account and follow it. Go on.
